About Me

El Gitano de Pekín
Can Wang

Can Wang, known as “El Gitano de Pekín,” is a pioneering flamenco guitarist and the first Chinese artist to earn an official flamenco guitar degree in Spain. Born in Beijing in 1990, Can Wang’s journey into music began with piano and accordion during his childhood. However, it was flamenco’s profound rhythms and soul-stirring melodies that captured his heart and defined his artistic path.

After completing his undergraduate studies, Can Wang moved to Andalusia, the cradle of flamenco, to immerse himself in its traditions. He studied under the legendary maestro Manolo Sanlúcar and was later admitted as the top candidate to the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Córdoba “Rafael Orozco.” Graduating in 2022 with the highest overall score, including a perfect thesis score, he cemented his place as a virtuoso of the art form. He further deepened his expertise with a Master’s degree in Flamenco Analysis and Research at the University of Cádiz, earning top honors.

Can Wang’s dedication to flamenco transcends borders. In 2015, he founded the Flamenco China website, where he has shared his knowledge through over 30 lectures across China. His performances at major festivals and concert halls in Spain, Europe, and Asia, such as the Festival Internacional de Guitarra de Ronda and the Granada Guitar Festival, have garnered critical acclaim. Notably, in 2024, he became the first Chinese artist to perform a solo flamenco concert in Seville, Spain, at the prestigious Espacio Turina.

Can Wang is also a celebrated composer and educator. His instructional books, Detailed Explanation of Flamenco Guitar Techniques and Detailed Explanation of Flamenco Guitar Forms and Rhythms, have become essential guides for aspiring guitarists. His original compositions, like the romantic soleá, introspective taranta, and spirited tangos, reflect a deep connection to flamenco’s roots while exploring its contemporary possibilities. His single “Vengo de Pekín,” released in 2021 under Airmusic Spain, beautifully captures his identity as a bridge between cultures.

Featured in major Spanish media, including El País and Canal Sur, Can Wang has become a cultural ambassador, introducing flamenco to new audiences worldwide. With plans to release a new single in 2025, he continues to push boundaries, sharing the passion and depth of flamenco with audiences everywhere.
